How to make your clothes go the distance

Updated: May 24, 2020

It may not be a widely known fact, but the certain cycles and methods we use to wash our clothes can have a profound effect on how long an item lasts, today we will reveal the best laundry tips, tricks and methods to get the most out of your garments.

1. Wash less

First a simple yet great tip. while washing is necessary, everything time you wash your clothes they are tumbled, thrown and soaked which is not great for the garment. We are not talking about walking around like a stinky mess, but trying to get three wears out of a garment before washing is very ideal.

2. Don’t dry clean often

Not only is dry cleaning a huge expense, but the chemicals used in the process of dry cleaning are very bad for the environment! Which can lead to your suits to fade and deteriorate. Alternatively, hang your suits in the bathroom while you shower, the steam will refresh your suits without nasty chemicals.

3. Wash on cold

A cold wash is a great simple tip as it does not burn the clothes and reduces risk of colour bleeding and fading.

4. Don’t overload the machine

While doing multiple washing does use a lot of water which is bad for the environment, overloading your washing machine can ruin clothes as they constantly rub up against each other which can accelerate fading.

5. Chill it on the detergent

Other than being bad for the environment, using too much detergent can leave your clothes stiff and dull. Instead, try use half the recommended amount, and the other half baking soda (which acts as a detergent booster), this way the clothes will be kept more vibrant and its better for the environment!.

6. Wash dark clothes inside/out

This method will prevent your nice dark garments from fading too quickly, and eliminate any cracking

7. When possible, use a a clothes line

Possibly a better known fact, but drying your clothes using the sun/air is not only better than an energy-consuming drying machine, but is better for your clothes too

8. Use a delicates bag

It is a great idea to invest in a delicates bag, this method will not only help your sort your washing easier, but prevent your delicates from ripping/tearing in the machine.
