Our Favourite Natural Dyes

Writer: Cara StoneCara Stone

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to travel to India for three weeks. Between discussing environmental issues, drinking lots of tea, and enjoying a love affair with idly, I was introduced to the world of natural dyes. Making (and dyeing) my own clothes has been something I've always wanted to do, but like most people, I threw that idea in the 'I-never-have-time-but-maybe-one-day' box.

Well, seeing as most of us are staying home to do our part in managing this pandemic, now is the perfect time to create a piece you'll love! Today, we're sharing our favourite natural dyes to create the colour of your dreams.

For mustard yellows and sunshine hues...

  • Turmeric

  • Onion Skins

Be pretty in pink (or red) with...

  • Avocado Pits & Skins

  • Beetroot

  • Red cabbage - just add something acidic like lemon juice or apple cider vinegar (without the acid you'll get a lovely shade of purple!)

For something green or blue...

  • Spinach

  • Red cabbage - just add something alkaline like bicarb soda
