HARA the Label is setting the bar for consciously created intimates. The label is the brainchild of Allie Cameron who came face-to-face with the fashion industry’s impact on the environment while travelling India. Through using sustainable fabrics, natural dyes, and collaborating with the Environmental Justice Foundation, HARA models what all businesses looking to tread lightly on the planet should strive for.
Sustainable and Ethical Production
HARA focuses on having a transparent, single-location supply chain. Based in Melbourne, everything from the dyeing of fabric to shipping of products occurs at HARA’s home base. So that means reduced shipping miles, less pollution and less greenhouse gas emissions! In house recycling systems also mitigate pre-consumption waste like fabric offcuts. Employees work under the Australian Textile, Clothing, Footwear and Associated Industries Award 2010, which HARA is upfront about on their website. But on top of the Government requirements, HARA also strives to offer flexible breaks and time off, a space in which employees can freely exercise their rights, and a safe and respectful work environment.
Bamboo Fabric
The bamboo HARA sources to create their intimates is pesticide, insecticide, and fertiliser-free. Hooray! Bamboo requires less water and doesn’t rely on irrigation, as opposed to cotton. As an added bonus, the plant both absorbs more carbon dioxide and produces more oxygen than trees! The bamboo fibre used in HARA’s intimates is produced in a closed-loop system and sourced from OEKO-TEX 100 and organic certified suppliers. This bamboo fabric is also great for your bod, being incredibly soft and hypo-allergenic!
Say goodbye to unnatural dyes
Plant dyes are in baby! HARA uses turmeric, indigo, and madder root to naturally dye their fabric - a choice which minimises harm to the environment and your skin.
We strive from seed to store to empower lives and rejuvenate the earth. Our mission is to use the label as a platform to bring change, awareness and education to the issues within the fashion industry. - HARA
Working towards a better world with the Environmental Justice Foundation
If the body-positivity HARA promotes on their instagram page wasn’t enough, the label has also teamed up with the Environmental Justice Foundation, an organisation that is highlighting the often concealed environmental and human rights abuses in remote areas. Each HARA purchase goes towards helping EJF campaign for an international phase-out of pesticides, secure protection for refugees of climate change, train activists, and promote better agricultural practices that prioritise the environment, biodiversity, and livelihoods.
