Sustainable Brand of the Week - Milk & Thistle

Updated: May 24, 2020

Milk and Thistle Boutique Newtown

592 King Street Newtown 2042

Established in Sydney in 2006, Milk and Thistle’s reputation is built upon their ethical production ethos and signature digital and screen prints on their well constructed, easy-fit garments.

Owner, Sydney designer Danielle Atkinson, left her full time job in the music industry to start a family, later deciding to study textile design. Atkinson carefully selects the collections sold in her Newtown store, with a focus on what materials they use, and who they produce with.

Milk and Thistle promises their shoppers ethical production and high quality products, with all their branded clothing designed, printed, and manufactured in Australia.

The Australian brand offers seasonal collections specialising in patterned or block coloured wardrobe staples. They pride themselves on making all their dresses, jumpsuits and skirts with natural fabrics and fibres like linen, Tencal and cotton. There is also a stock selection of carefully curated fashion items from other designers, who have similar mission statements and ethos.

To avoid the waste of overproduction, Atkinson is also very attentive to how much the brand is producing, only making small batches at a time. This means that most clothing items are only available for a limited amount of time, so get shopping!

Sydneysiders can also shop accessories, homewares, and lifestyle items sourced from around the world.

The Australian brand also has an online store, with a strong following in Melbourne.
