I’m 100% guilty of wearing the same outfit on repeat and neglecting all the other clothes in my wardrobe, but here are a few steps I use to rekindle my love with the clothes in my closet.
1. Donate!
To get creative with your wardrobe, it’s best to start with refamiliarising yourself with what you already have. However, when we’re presented with clutter, we can find ourselves overwhelmed. That means that it’s time to donate that top you bought two years ago and have never worn, but can’t bring yourself to give away “just in case”. Donating the untouched clothes in your closet to your local Vinnies or Salvos, opens up more closet space, allowing you to evaluate your overall closet more easily. I promise that once you get rid of it, you’ll forget you ever had it!
While deciding what clothes you’re going to donate, you’re simultaneously familiarising yourself with all the clothes you WOULD wear. I guarantee that you will find clothes you forgot you even have!
2. Organise, organise, organise
In the wise words of Marie Kondo, “Your real life begins after putting your house in order”. Organising your wardrobe and having a place for every clothing item, makes you feel more in control and will help with keeping you familiar with all clothing items that are usually hidden at the back.
3. Mix things together unexpectedly
The key to this step is to force yourself to go beyond visualising what will look good together, and instead just try on as much as possible. Pair going out tops with casual bottoms, or casual tops with fancy shoes, and if it looks bad who cares! I guarantee you’ll find some unlikely pairs that look surprisingly chic.
4.Ban yourself from buying new clothes
Temporarily, at least. Set a realistic timeframe for yourself (e.g. 6 months) and stick to it. But if you REALLY can’t find anything to wear e.g. for a special occasion, hit up your best friend and borrow one of their outfits.
